In 1989, from the humblest beginning, Gary Young started what would become the world’s leading essential oil company, Young Living Essential Oils, on a one-quarter acre farm in Spokane, WA. On this small plot of ground, Gary carefully cultivated sage, clary sage, lavender, bergamot, tarragon and German chamomile. With his background in agriculture, the growing season soon produced a robust crop.
Toward the end of that season, he built his first distiller and distilled his first essential oils in his kitchen. Testing of the first tiny batches confirmed that they were of the highest quality fulfilling his belief that with properly grown and harvested plants and proper distillation that he could produce therapeutic-grade essential oils.
Gary and Mary Young wanted to share their love of essential oils with everyone they met. In fact, it has been Gary’s mission from the beginning to share the oils with the entire world.

The Saint Maries, Idaho Farm
Evergreen forests shelter this small farm in northern Idaho, one of three Young Living Lavender Farms. Pure and pristine, far from the pollution of urban centers, this farm is located where there is minimal risk of contamination from aerial pesticide spraying and irrigation runoff from neighboring farms.
The Mona, Utah Farm
In 1871, Howard and Martha Jane Corey staked a homestead on a parcel of desert land near a small stream in central Utah. While Howard raises livestock, Martha gained a reputation by selling liniments and medicines made from the herbs that she gathered and grew on this land.In 1996, Gary and Mary Young purchased 1,600 acres of rural land nestled next to a tall mountain range in Utah. This land was destined to become the home of the largest herb farm and distillery in the world. As if by divine providence, this was the very same land that Martha Corey, a herbalist, had grown her herbs 125 years earlier.
The Simiane-La-Rotonde, France Farm
At the foot of a magnificent little village located in the Provence area of France is the only American owned lavender farm. Provence, world famous for its beauty and fresh-food crops, is also well known for its fragrant fields of lavender. The farm in Simiane is hilly and dotted with houses hundreds of years old. Some of the natives believe that the scent of the lavender exerts calming, uplifting effects on the villages and people of the area.
